(un)schooling?
I think it might be interesting to try to keep track of the numerous BOOM! Thoughts that are making their way into my head these days.
This one keeps popping up: to school or not to school?
So far I am aware of these options:
- Traditional schooling
- Montessori schooling
- Home schooling
Traditional Schooling
I’m not liking this option. I don’t want a little automaton waiting to be told what to learn. Being filled up with whatever is on the menu today. Seemed like a big waste of time when I was there and puts too much emphasis on whether the teacher was any good at their job.
Montessori Schooling
Sounds like a great mix between the traditional and home schooling methods. I’m sure there is a long wait time to get in (I think they give preference to Montessori parents first, understandable) and it’s expensive, I think. I like the idea but might not be able to afford it. Hmmmm
Home School / Unschool
For me, this is most attractive. It’s really hands on and kind of scarey because of all the negative press people, who don’t know anything about it, like to quote, but it is the most flexible. The family can travel and it won’t interrupt the learning process (it’ll be part of it). There are lots of support groups around, if you look, that will help out with curriculums and ticking all the government boxes. I have no idea how to sell it to Emma though. So it might actually be the hardest option politically.
I know that it all seems a little premature, but I’ve actually been thinking about this for quite some time, on and off. Suddenly it’s all beginning to take on a sence of urgency like never before.
